Polyconal Production

Even though I need a murine monoclonal antibody, are there any reasons for making a rabbit polyclonal antiserum?

There are several good reasons for preparing a conventional polyclonal antiserum at the same time you begin a monoclonal antibody project. Rarely does a single antibody perform outstandingly in every assay. Some monoclonal antibodies produced to small peptides or recombinant proteins do not recognize native antigen. Production of a polyclonal antibody is quicker and less expensive than making a monoclonal antibody. If mice respond poorly to your antigen, a rabbit or goat might respond better. Also, producing monoclonal antibodies requires substantial time, effort, and cost. For some antigens or applications, rabbit polyclonal antiserum works equally well. Still uncertain?  We will gladly discuss with you the different options and strategies to get you the antibody you need.
